Iron Man 3 (2013) Review

Tony Stark finds himself struggling after what happened in New York and this is taking its toll on him, not sleeping and constantly building puts a strain on himself and his relationship with Pepper. But in true Stark style he also manages to threat the terrorist Mandarin.

I have been looking forward to this film since let’s face it The Avengers finished, and it certainly did not disappoint. We got everything we have grown to love about Iron Man, the story is good, the action is good and the funny moments/humour is still present. I also liked the introduction of a child as this created some very funny scenes without much effort. This is all positive as looking forward to seeing a film a lot sometimes goes bad as you then expect too much from it.

Robert Downey Jr. is just fantastic as Tony Stark and you really cannot help but like him. The storyline in this film goes back to 1999 and shows that what goes around comes around, you can create enemies without even realising and your past can come back to haunt you. This is certainly the case for Stark who could not really remember too much about what happened that night.

The terrorism is very strange from the beginning with people, or that should be ex-soilders suddenly blowing up in different place, with bright red eyes and skin for that matter. But how long will it take Stark to work everything out and how far can he get without his suit after his home as been destroyed? Plenty of questions which I am not really going to answer as don’t want to spoil anything major about the film, you will have to find out for yourself when you head to the cinema to see this film.

Unfortunately I saw the 3D version which I don’t think was anything special at all and did not add anything that the 2D version would have been missing. I would have been a little happier if we had the limited edition 3D glasses as then at least I could have been a bit more of geek about it all. I wish they would just stop with this whole 3D fade, don’t want to get too much into this though and take over the review.

Guy Pearce is always so good as a bad guy and really fits the part very well. I have to admit I hardly recognised him from the 1999 scenes, he looked pretty awful with the hair! Ben Kingsley does not really have too much screen time as Mandarin and a slight twist was a little bit silly really but you can judge that for yourself.

A lot of emphasis was put on the relationship between Stark and Potts which was nice to see as romance is often something we don’t see very much of in these types of films or it is just mentioned rather than anything major going on. But we really see a massive change in Stark from the first film to this one in how much he actually loves Pepper and that he really would do anything for her. I thought that was a great touch and good progression of the character growing.

Another good character progression has to be Don Cheadle as James Rhodes / War Machine – who has been renamed as Iron Patriot as it was agreed that sounded better than War Machine something Stark did not agree with. But this is another good relationship with Stark and how well they work together is brilliant to see, especially the “banter” between the two characters.

Overall, this really is such an enjoyable film and makes you look forward to seeing the next instalments of Thor and Captain America before we get to see Stark again in the Avengers 2 – which let’s face it is going to be pretty impressive. Make sure you stay for a little something after all of the credits, it’s not on very long but certainly worth it if you have loved all the Marvel films in recent years. So get yourself along to the cinema to see another fantastic outing for Tony Stark and Iron Man you won’t be disappointed at all.
