The story of Violin teacher Roberta Guaspari and her struggle to keep the program in Harlem for school children.
Based on a true story this incredibly moving film is a joy to watch throughout, as even when something sad happens it bounces back with some good news. You cannot help but love what Roberta is doing for the children even if they may not realise it right away.
It all started when her husband left her with two boys Lexi and Nick to raise and took the job in Harlem moving her family there as well. They have problems and issues to begin with but then really become close and help each other so much.
The story goes over a 10 year period and how everything was started we then skip 10 years in advance seeing how successful the program had become but how it also faced the devastating cutting – when schools cut arts and music. This then sees Roberta take on her greatest challenge yet. Organising a special concert which would help fund the project for the next year.
I don’t think anyone could have done this film as well as Streep did, she really is such an incredible actress. She takes us on the fantastic journey with her due to an incredible performance. Learning to play the violin in preparation for the role, practicing 6 hours a day!
The film builds up the characters so much for the viewers to really care about them and want them to succeed. Seeing the children who you would never expect to play a classical instrument really take it to it and care very deeply about it. Having to overcome pressures from their parents and friends at school. But they think it is worth it and really want to succeed at playing.

What’s great about this film is that it’s directed by Wes Craven, the same guy who brought us “The Last House on the Left,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and the “Scream” series. He wanted to prove that he could do a straight drama. It’s too bad that he hasn’t done more like this.
