Postcards from the Edge (1990) Review

Hollywood actress Suzanne Vale is addicted to different drugs. After a stint in rehab and trying to get her life back on track. Whilst having to live with her mother to film a new movie.

I have to admit that I spent a lot of this film trying to decide who I love more between Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. As let’s face it they really are two of the best actresses the movie world has ever seen. Seeing them both in the same film and being daughter and mother is just wow. This is another one of those films that I cannot believe, I have just seen for the first time now.

After Suzanne has had her spell in rehab de-toxing from all of the drugs she had been taking, it helps her move on with her life and understand what is important to her. This is helped by her mother Doris Mann, who seems to have a slight drinking problem. Suzanne has always felt that her mother still treats her too much like a child, but that is something which she deals with when she realises how her grandmother still treats her mother.

Very nice story of a mother and daughters relationship and how when you hit a certain age you can become friends with each other as well. Not only will your mother always look out for you, you start to do the same for her.

I also loved how we had both Meryl and Shirley singing at different points in the film, it just made it so much more enjoyable. Especially as you can imagine actresses who are theatrical actually singing at parties and generally entertaining everyone who is there.

This is definitely a film I would watch over and over as it’s so enjoyable with brilliant performances from both actresses who are two of my favorite actresses.
