Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) Review

Shredder joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman, the turtles must put a stop to the evil plan from Krang who is trying to take over earth.

Our favourite turtles are struggling with life in the shadows and are wishing that it could be different. That people accepted and liked them, also giving them the credit they deserve for helping to save the city (and the world). The brothers loyalty to each other is tested to the limit as they must learn again to be a team.

I find that this film still has that link to my childhood and that has to be the main reason that I went to see it. The second film in the reboot and in all honesty I couldn’t really remember what happened in that first film. Although I do remember thinking it was pretty fun. This film continues with that fun theme and keeping the catchphrases and certain things for each character. Something like that has to be a plus for older audiences while still working on new audiences for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I still fail to find any point to Megan Fox in films, but then again I am not in her target audience being female. Always used as a symbol or maybe that should be an object. She’s never really given any interesting traits as a character and no growth has been given for April in this second film. Although I guess her purpose is served getting a wide range of men into the cinema to see the film.

Anyway the union between Shredder and Stockman create havoc for New York City as they use serum to turn two of the henchmen into animal fighting machines. One becomes a Rhino and the other a Warthog and I will admit they did look good and created some good fight scenes along with amusing moments.

The film doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither should the audience. Something that I think we need at times when heading to the cinema to watch a film, not serious with some funny moments and a throwback to childhood. Nothing wrong with that at times!

The turtles are shown to be growing up and struggling with the choices they must make. Leonardo is really doubting his role as the leader especially when his brothers do not agree with him withholding information about the serum being able to turn them human. Will they be able to become a team again in time to beat Shredder and Krang?

If you are looking for a film that does not require a lot of thought but fun and giving you some laughs along the way.

  1. I prefer my blockbusters to require at least some thought. I do think its interesting how they are just going completely old school with the characters though.

Yeah I can see what you mean with that. I done this as a double header with Warcraft first so not having to try and work anything out was good haha
