BAFTA Awards 2009 – Pictures

Ok, so nearly a week later I have decided to post a few pictures from the 2009 BAFTA awards. The only award I really cared about was Mickey Rourke winning for “The Wrestler” and he certainly did :-) I just loved his speech as well. He is brilliant !!! Hopefully next week he will have the Oscar gold in his hand.

Movie Quote of the Day 6

Inspirational quote today from “Fight Club”

“This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.”

Pretty Woman (1990) Review

“Pretty Woman” has to be one of the best loved romantic comedies and possibly one of the films which started off the popularity to this genre of movies. It certainly put Julia Roberts level of fame on a whole new level. Who would think a story about a prostitute and wealthy business man would actually turn out to be so heart warming and sweet, with a lovely happy “hollywood” ending. But despite the never going to happen, don’t glorify being a prostitute arguments, I really do adore this film and defiantly is one of my favorites. I love Julia Roberts I really do think she is a fantastic actress, i’ve always been such a big fan of hers.

Movie Quote of the Day 4

I don’t really know what inspired today’s quote. But I am sure I cried at this point in . . . . “Rocky Balboa”

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very nasty place, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) Review

To take away the seriousness of the Awards season films and trying to watch previous Oscar winning movies. I decided to have a bit of a chick flick adventure and go to see “He’s Just Not That Into You”. Just for something that is quite easy to watch and doesn’t really take much attention span to follow what’s going on in it.

Doubt (2008) Review

I have doubts. I have such doubts.

The setting for this film which is based on a play, is 1964 at St. Nicholas school in the Bronx. The Principal Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) who loves nothing more than to terrify the children as she is a big believer in discipline. Sister James (Amy Adams) has just started teaching and does not have any of the same mannerisms as Sister Aloysius. Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) a well liked priest is popular in the local community with the Sunday masses he does the sermon for.

Unforgiven (1992) Review

Best Picture Oscar winner Unforgiven.

My first viewing of this Oscar winning film, and my first thought is why haven’t I seen this fantastic film before? I really cannot answer that question but that’s what I kept thinking throughout watching and especially at the end. It really was just fantastic, and truly deserved to win an Oscar for best picture.

Movie Quote of the Day 3

As I am currently looking at Oscar winning films. A great quote from “American Beauty”.

“I don’t think theres anything worse than being ordinary”

Frost/Nixon (2008) Review

Why didn’t you burn the tapes?

I can imagine at the time and probably still now that was the first question everyone would have been thinking. With such a scandal why weren’t the tapes exposed of in some way or form. I mean it seems as though everyone involved was waiting for the tapes to be found. You cant exactly deny it if you have been recorded saying certain things. I didn’t really know too much about the interview before seeing the film, although I do have the actual interviews on DVD but have not got round to watching them yet, just to see the difference and how much drama was added to make the film a bit more entertaining.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) Review

Life isn’t measured in minutes, but in moments.

13 Oscar nominations . . . Hype . . . Months of wondering after seeing the trailer every week til its release . . .

The Reader (2008) Review

Nominated for Best Picture at this years Oscars. Kate Winslet is also nominated in the Leading Role might I add. This seemed to cause some confusion with Kate winning supporting role at the Golden Globe awards.

Milk (2008) Review

My name is Harvey Milk and I am here to recruit you!

Sean Penn pulls out all the stops again to show how much of a gifted and talented actor that he is in his portrayal of Harvey Milk. The first openly gay politician to be elected in the United States, in the state of California. The film shows Milk’s life from when he first moved to San Fransisco with Scott (James Franco) to the many different elections he fought to win. It took a lot of time for this to happen, but eventually he gets elected.

Movie Quote of the Day 2

Is a double from Brokeback Mountain. Both summing up how I feel at this very moment in time . . .

“I wish I knew how to quit you.”

“Tell you what. The truth is . . . sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.”

The Damned United (2009)

I first encountered “The Damned United” a few years back now when I read the book after borrowing it from a Leeds United fan who was very passionate in hate for Brian Clough, because of what he done in such a short time at the club. 44 days in fact. The book was a fantastic read, written in a very interesting method. I had told a few people who are football fans that they should read the book. That was before I had even heard that a film was being made. I was very excited to hear when it was announced a film would be made.

Then to see Michael Sheen was taking on the role of Cloughie. They really could not have found a better actor to take the role. Sheen was incredible as Tony Blair in “The Queen” and as David Frost in “Frost/Nixon” so how incredible for him to eventually take to centre stage as one of the greatest characters to ever grace the world of football.

I have now seen the trailer a few times in the cinema now and really think this is the film I am most anticipating over the next few months. The support cast is fantastic as well, including Colm Meany taking on the role of Don Revie(I had the privilege to see Meany in the play “Moon For the Misbegotten” with him playing opposite Kevin Spacey in 2007, and he was incredible). Timothy Spall portraying Peter Taylor, Cloughie’s right hand man and Jim Broadbent as Derby County’s chairman Sam Longson.

Today, I saw the poster for the first time and think its really well put together.

The Damned United Poster

“They love me for what I’m not . . . . . . they hate me for what I am” Brian Clough

I just think having that quote on the poster really explains Cloughie. This film really does have the potential to become the best films about football, as I cant think of any that are actually brilliant. Lets hope it has a wide release across the UK.

Release Date: 27th March 2009

The Wrestler (2008) Review

Love. Pain. Glory.

Poster

Poster

Every now and then a film will come along that I really take to heart and instantly becomes a favorite after the first viewing, and yes “The Wrestler” is one of them. Ironically the last film that done that to me was another sport based film “Million Dollar Baby”. I have a soft spot for sport films, and often taken aback by them, I guess I feel I can relate to them in some ways of wanting to compete at your sport no matter what obstacles are placed in your way.

Movie Quote of the Day 1

So from today onwards I am going to attempt to post a favorite movie quote of mine . . . possibly relating to how I am feeling on the day. Or maybe just a random quote, we will see.

“Sometimes I wish I had never met you. Because then I could go to sleep at night not knowing there was someone like you out there.” (Good Will Hunting)

Revolutionary Road (2008) Review

How do you break free without breaking apart?

I guess the tagline is a great place to start on describing the film, as that was the main problem between Frank (Dicapro) and his wife April (Winslet).  Its obvious that in the beginning they really did love each other so much, but over the years after moving to a house and having two children this condemned their relationship to turn to hate as they both blamed one another for not making it in what they wanted to do.
